Dublin (Ireland)
Website: www.dublincity.ie
Dublin is located on the East coast of Ireland with the Wicklow mountains to the south and rich agricultural land to the west and north. The Dublin City Region is Ireland's political and administrative capital and is home to 1.27 million people accounting for 28% of the population of Ireland. Despite expectations that it would slow, Ireland has seen strong population growth of 30% in the period 1991 to 2011. Some 525,383 people live in the Dublin City Council area, which is one of four Dublin local authorities.
Dublin's position as a welcoming and fast growing capital with a young population has made it an attractive destination for inward migration from other EU states. While the free movement of labour within the EU and Ireland's faciltative policy after EU enlargement resulted in large inflows of economic migrants from eastern europe, there were also significant inflows from Asia, Latin America and Africa during the Celtic Tiger period 1990 - 2007. With the the economic recession in recent years, the pace of inmigration has slowed while emigration has increased however modern Dublin has retained a significantly more diverse population than at any time in the city's history with over 100 nationalities now living in the capital.
The Dublin region is the economic driver of the State, accounting for some 40% of economic output. Services (market and non market) dominate employment in the Dublin City Region, accounting for some 90% of employment. The city has high levels of employment in knowledge intensive industries particularly in software, IT, financial and business services. It has an internationally recognised financial services centre (IFSC) with over 32,700 employed by these companies of which over 22,000 are located in Dublin.
