Website: www.rennes.fr
Rennes is located 360 km West of Paris with 210,000 inhabitants (521,000 for the agglomeration). It is the historical, administrative, economical and cultural heart of Brittany - a seaside region with a strong cultural identity - and houses the headquarters of the regional prefecture of the Ille-et-Vilaine department.
Rennes is a young university city with 41,000 primary school and high school students and 58,000 university students studying in two universities and 28 specialised higher education schools.
Rennes is highly renowned, notably in the field of audiovisual technology, telecommunication and information technology. Located at the very heart of the Images & Networks competitive cluster, its Rennes Atalante science park is home to over 250 high-technology companies employing 13,500 people. Rennes is also known for its research in the field of agri-business and hosts each year the SPACE trade fair (115,000 visitors), a leading event for all major players around the world, particularly in poultry and cattle-farming.
The fully restored city centre, with its medieval to 18th century architecture and its pedestrian streets bursting with shops and cafes, make it a friendly place both during the day and at night.
Every year in December, with the Transmusicales, Rennes becomes the European capital of rock and modern music. But thanks to the "Mettre en scène' (theatre and dancing), "Travelling' (cinema), and "Tombées de la Nuit' (music, street art) festivals as well as events at the opera, the Théatre National de Bretagne, the Centre Chorégraphique and many more locations, the culture doesn't stop!
Controlled urbanism, a policy which supports social diversity and public transport (the first metro line which opened in March 2002, is used by over 100,000 people every day, and a second line is being built), as well as its many parks make Rennes a pleasant place to live.
